Dental Anxiety

You are not the only patient who feels a knot in your stomach at the thought of a dental chair. Dental anxiety affects a large share of adults, and for many, that fear is enough to delay care for years at a time.

At DG Dental, we built our entire approach around the idea that comfort and quality care are not separate goals. Dr. Dory Green offers sedation dentistry designed to meet you exactly where your anxiety lives, whether that is a mild flutter of nerves or a fear that has kept you out of a dental chair for years.

What Sedation Options Are Available

We offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, for patients who want a light, quickly reversible way to ease into treatment. For those who need a deeper level of calm, we also offer oral conscious sedation using Xanax or Valium, either on their own or combined, depending on what a patient’s anxiety and procedure call for. We do not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia, so you remain awake and responsive throughout your visit while feeling far more relaxed than you would otherwise.

A recent BMC Oral Health study on dental anxiety in young adults found that the prevalence of dental anxiety among study respondents was 63.9%, with nearly 20% reporting extreme anxiety. Numbers like these are part of why we treat anxiety management as a core part of dentistry, not an afterthought.

How We Get To Know Your Specific Triggers

Every patient’s anxiety looks different, and we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all comfort plan. Dr. Green regularly asks patients a simple question before treatment even begins: what can we do to make this more comfortable, and what is it that bothers you the most? For some patients, it is the sound of the drill. For others, it is the smell in the office, or simply the feeling of losing control while in the chair.

Once we know your specific trigger, we build the visit around it. Patients who are anxious about the unknown often benefit most from Dr. Green slowing down and walking through x-rays, photos, and treatment plans step by step, so nothing feels rushed or confusing. Taking that extra time helps patients feel heard, and it often does more to ease anxiety than sedation alone.

Comfort Options Beyond Sedation

Sedation is one part of managing dental anxiety, but the environment around you matters just as much. We offer several comfort amenities that patients can choose based on what helps them most.

  • Music: Bring your own playlist or choose from ours to help you relax during treatment.
  • Noise-canceling headphones: Block out the sounds of dental tools for patients who find them distressing.
  • Aromatherapy: Calming scents throughout the office ease the tension many patients feel before treatment even starts.
  • Weighted blankets: A gentle, grounding pressure that helps some patients feel calmer in the chair.
  • Longer appointment times: Extra time built into your visit so nothing feels rushed.

These options are never one-size-fits-all. We ask, we listen, and we adjust the visit to fit you.

What A Nervous First Visit Can Look Like

If you are the type of patient who feels anxious just walking through the door, you are not alone, and you do not have to commit to treatment on your first visit. Dr. Green has offered nervous walk-in patients a no-treatment tour of the office instead, giving them the chance to see the space, ask questions, and talk through what a real visit would look like before anything happens. For many patients, simply removing the unknown is enough to make the next step feel possible.

This same philosophy carries into every appointment moving forward. Rather than treating anxiety as something to push through, we treat it as something to understand and plan around, whether that means root canal therapy, oral surgery, or a routine cleaning.
